It is normal for these homeless children to live and sleep outside on the street with other kids in similar situations to hang-out with. They have no home and getting even a basic education is impossible.
They survive on what little they can find in the streets. The consequences are that these children are: illiterate, delinquent, and often forced into prostitution, violence, alcohol and drug addiction.
The number of homeless children in Peru forced to live in the street is increasing at an alarming rate.
Those unfortunate enough to commit petty criminal acts out of desperation and often unaware of the consequences, are sent to reformatories. These shelters are often unbearable and offer living conditions far worse than what these homeless children experienced living in the streets.
In order to stop this frightening trend and get these unfortunate children off the streets, Father Alain Leroux has founded the "Casa Hogar Niño Jesús." A safe place these homeless children can finally call home.
Some families have sent their children to the Casa because they were not able to provide for them. The majority are children that have been collected of the streets of Peru. Some lucky enough were sent by a judge.
The children who are sheltered in this house benefit from a spiritual education and live in a safe family environment. They receive much-needed attention and affection from Father Alain Leroux and volunteers. They have the chance to grow up in a spiritual environment that will help guide them through life under the protection of the Virgin Mary. The father's apostolate includes evangelism, receiving the sacrament and taking catechism lessons. Finally, they receive the Eucharist and discover real nature of a loving and merciful God.
When they first arrive, the children are eased into this new environment with a special integration program. But once used to their new home they take part in school and, of course, participate in domestic chores.
At the end of their studies, each child benefits from academic or professional training depending on his preferences and aptitudes.
The "Casa Hogar niño Jesús" provides a loving and caring environment to give these children the self confidence and education necessary to live fulfilling life.
It is possible to break the cycle that made these children homeless in the first place and give them hope.
